What are Dental Crowns?

Enhancing and Protecting Your Smile: The Benefits and Applications of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are custom-made covers that protect a damaged or decayed tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and functionality. We use crowns when your tooth is too structurally compromised to support a smaller dental filling.

Made from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, dental crowns are designed to mimic the natural appearance of your teeth, ensuring seamless integration into your smile.

Types of Crowns

Porcelain

Aesthetic crowns that are free of visible metals and are closely matched to your surrounding teeth.

Gold

Made from a gold alloy, these crowns withstand heavy biting and chewing pressure, making them ideal for back teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

A type of ceramic crown with a reinforced metal base underneath.

The Dental Crown Process

At House of Dentistry, the dental crown process is carefully tailored to meet your unique needs.
Here's a step-by-step overview of what you can expect:

1

Examination and Consultation

During your initial visit, Dr. Kapadia will conduct a comprehensive examination of your tooth and overall smile. As we assess the damaged tooth, he will determine whether a dental crown is the appropriate treatment option or if an alternative is available. If a crown is recommended, Dr. Kapadia will discuss the procedure in detail and address any concerns or questions you may have.
2

Tooth Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with getting your dental crown, the affected tooth will need to be prepared. This involves removing a small portion of the tooth's outer structure to create space for the crown to fit over the entire tooth. Numbing medication is used to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
3

Impression

Next, a highly accurate digital scan or "virtual impression" of your prepared tooth will be taken. This image serves as a 3D mold, which will be sent to our dental laboratory. The technicians at the lab will use the digital information to fabricate your custom crown, ensuring an impeccable fit and natural appearance according to Dr. Kapadia's specifications.
4

Temporary Crown Placement

While your permanent crown is being crafted, a temporary crown will be placed over your prepared tooth. This temporary restoration protects the tooth from sensitivity or damage when eating while you wait for the permanent crown to be made.
5

Final Crown Placement

Once your custom crown fabrication is complete, you will return to our office for its placement. Dr. Kapadia will ensure the crown fits perfectly, making any necessary adjustments, and then the crown will be permanently bonded to your tooth.
